Forecasting / Terrain Diagnostics
TARL is developing the geographic and classification foundations required to support future terrain-aware atmospheric research and diagnostic systems.
The Foundation
Terrain-aware research requires a consistent way of describing the landscapes and landforms being studied. TARL is therefore developing its own landscape and landform classification methodologies before attempting to build a broader terrain diagnostic framework.
The objective is to establish a geographic foundation that can eventually support comparisons between different environments while maintaining a clear and reproducible methodology.
This work remains in development. Classification rules, geographic scales, terminology, data requirements, and validation methods are still being evaluated and refined.
The TARL terrain classification framework is not yet finalized. Future diagnostic applications will depend on the successful development and validation of this underlying foundation.

Why Classification Comes First
If terrain environments cannot be described consistently, comparisons between locations can become subjective or difficult to reproduce.
TARL's current priority is therefore not to produce a finished terrain diagnostic product, but to determine how landscapes and landforms should be represented before those classifications are incorporated into additional research systems.
Development Principles
The classification framework will be evaluated on its ability to remain consistent, reproducible, and scientifically useful across different environments.

A terrain classification should be applied consistently rather than changing according to the individual analyzing a location.

The methodology should be capable of being reproduced using clearly defined inputs, procedures, and classification rules.

Future Direction
A sufficiently validated terrain classification framework could eventually provide a geographic foundation for additional TARL research.
Potential future applications may include terrain diagnostics, observational planning, environmental comparisons, instrumentation deployments, and other terrain-aware atmospheric research.
These applications remain future directions. Their specific methods and capabilities will depend on the results of the classification research currently underway.
Development Status
TARL is currently evaluating its approach to landscape and landform classification. The goal is to establish a methodology that is scientifically defensible, reproducible, and useful across a broad range of geographic environments.
Classification methods will be refined as testing identifies limitations or areas where the framework can be improved.
TARL's terrain diagnostic capabilities will develop from the landscape and landform classification work currently underway. Additional methodology, datasets, visualizations, and diagnostic applications will be introduced as the underlying framework becomes sufficiently established.
